What If It Were Easy
What stops most people from trying to change their relationship to alcohol
is thinking it will be hard.
Hard is created first in the mind, with thoughts.
It will be miserable.
Life will never be the same...
Sometimes it's not hard.
Sometimes it's easy and we are pleasantly surprised.
After a couple weeks of adjustment
and noticing their thoughts,
my clients begin a new relationship with the part of their brain that is the HABIT.
They make it easy by talking to it with compassion and love.
And in turn, it responds with grace.
It becomes easier.
I like to think of "The Habit" of alcohol as a younger version of yourself that didn't get the love and validation she needed.
Now she's on the defense, but her BARK is way worse than her BITE.
Give her a name.
Mine was Mistress Mumawa, Master of Margaritas.
I fell in love with her.
I asked her what she needed.
I tenderly told her, I understand that's how we have always done things,
but it's not working for us anymore.
I've got this and we're going to check out this new route over here.
She complied a little easier every time until her threats became nonexistent.
She knew LOVE was the answer to a better life,
and the fears about NOT drinking, weren't true, they were just thoughts.
The threats of the habit are how it stays alive.
But your executive function can show her a new way.
Be kind and compassionate.
She is a part of you that needs to know it's okay to let go.
Not kicking, screaming and hiding,
yet enjoying the view through a new lens.
